About us: Awards and accolades
Luigi Micheletti Fondazione of Breccia,
in northern Italy, summarized the award given to the Bergslagen Ecomuseum
in 1998 as follows::
"The 1998 Micheletti Award for the best museum of
Technical or Industrial History among the participating candidates goes
to the Ecomuseum Bergslagen of central Sweden. This museum covers an area
of 750 km2 of forest land and describes a region that for hundreds of
years has constituted one of the foremost iron-producing territories of
Europe. Some 49 of these historical sites have been restored and made
accessible to the public. Every year improvements are made and new items
added. Given that the museum is being developed continuously, it has been
difficult to know which year would be the most appropriate one in which
to apply for the award. However, the positive improvements that have taken
place recently were considered to provide adequate grounds. The jury has
attached considerable weight to the valuable work done by the volunteers
in acting as guides and sources of information throughout the area covered
by the museum, and has also noted the enthusiasm that pervades all aspects
of the museum, which is manifest not only in those that do the work but
also among those institutions that support the museum financially."
The Ecomuseum Bergslagen won the "European
Museum of the Year" award for the best museum of Technical
or Industrial History.
