Abous us: Ecomuseum Bergslagen
The Bergslagen Ecomuseum takes the form
of a collaboration that includes seven local authorities (municipalities)
in the counties of Dalarna and Västmanland, and two other museums
run by the county councils, each of which is responsible for safeguarding
its own industrial heritage.
The museum was founded in the form of a collaborative venture in 1986,
involving seven local authorities and two county museums. It brought together
some 50 heritage sites, which are run by volunteers belonging to various
local-heritage associations.
In 1990, we created an institution with ten founder members: the seven
local authorities (Ludvika and Smedjebacken in Dalarna, and Norberg, Fagersta,
Skinnskatteberg, Surahammar and Hallstahammar in Västmanland); two
county museums (Dalarna and Västmanland); and a tourist organization,
Westmannaturism.
The Institution has a board whose members are representatives of the respective
founder members. The chairman of the board is appointed by the members
at the AGM for a term of four years, and the board is also responsible
for hiring a director.
The museum has an office and at the same time a visitor centre at one
of the sites, The Ludvika Homestead and Mining Museum, since 1th April
2006. There are many voluntary non-profit, local heritage associations
in each municipality, and these are organized under local collaborative
committees, and are also represented in a central Eco-council. The Eco-council
have opinions and effects on what direction the work is to take, and also
the approach of the Ecomuseum, its ideology, and other overriding issues.
The Eco-council has two deputys on the Ecomuseum’s board, one from
Västmanland and the other from Dalarna.
The work of the museum has three cornerstones: the Institution’s
Board of politicians, a Steering Group made up of two civil servants from
each of the founder members, and the voluntary, local heritage associations,
which are represented in the Eco-council.
The Chairman of the Board until the AGM in 2010 is Ingvar Henriksson,
who is also chairman of the Heritage and Recreation Board (Kultur och
Fritidsnämnden) in Ludvika.
