Abous us: The Eco-council

At most of the Ecomuseum Bergslagen sites there are teams of volunteers (largely members of local heritage associations) who help with the running of the museum sites. They assist in a variety of ways and organize activities related to the sites.

Everyone shares responsibility for the care and maintenance of the buildings and the natural environment around the sites. Many of the volunteers also belong to study circles, where they become involved in research on local history, and in documenting the area.

Each local authority should have a collaborative committee. Often an officer of the local authority, whose remit covers issues concerning the Ecomuseum, will serve as secretary for the committee. The main focus of the committee is on finding ways of helping to improve the sites and the associated activities within the local-authority area.

The Eco-council appoints a chairman and meets 6–8 times a year. The curator of the Ecomuseum plays an active part in the meetings and takes minutes. The Eco-council arranges a visit every year to historical sites and local heritage associations in other parts of the country, to forge new contacts and to benefit from the experience of others.

The Eco-council also organizes every year a Bergslagsting, which is a forum for extending knowledge and exchanging ideas and thoughts. Through invited speakers, issues affecting the Ecomuseum Bergslagen can be discussed and analysed in depth.
